S.

"He arrived knowing nothing of himself. Who is he? Soon he will know, because what begins at the water shall end there – and what ends there once more begin. This is what happens: Men become lost; men vanish; men are erased and reborn."

In August a mysterious teaser trailer appeared on Youtube titled "Stranger". All that was known was that it was the trailer to an upcoming movie by J.J. Abrams. But now the meaning behind the minute-long video has been revealed!

The trailer, depicted entirely in black and white, shows a man being washed up upon a beach at night. A figure holding a lantern then approaches the camera and the face of a man with his lips sewn shut emerges. The text "Soon he will know" then appears. Each word then disappears one-by-one until only the word "Soon" remains; the final taunt of the tease.

Overlain this is a monologue of a man speaking the above speech. It has now been revealed that this is a reference to the fictitious novel "S." by Doug Dorst. Abrams has adapted "S." into a movie with the assistance of Dorst. In the novel, a woman finds a book (Ship of Theseus) left by a stranger. In the margins the stranger has left a myriad of margin notes. She responds with notes of her own, replacing the book to where she found it to begin an unlikely conversation.

The real question is, can this project live up to the remaining mysteries that us mere mortals can't resist?

Disney's Best

There are HEAPS of Disney movies that we all love as classics, but here are my top 3 favourite!

The Lion King (1994)

As one of the highest grossing animated movies of all time, I'm sure that I am not the only one who loves this movie. Not only has it been re-released as a 3D movie, but it has also produced a hit broadway musical, now being the 7th longest running musical.

If you haven't seen the musical, its definitely worth it - the costumes are amazing, the music brought to life....It's the cirrrcle of lifeeee....haha....but seriously you may be a little skeptical, but just be a little simba-thetic and it and you will enjoy it too!

So here is an interesting fact: the film was originally going to be a rivalry between lions and baboons, Scar being the lead baboon....Rafiki would have been a cheetah! Also the team that were creating and working on this film were the Disney "B team", just being occupied while the "A team" made pocohuntas. Laslty...Pumba was also the first Disney character to display flatulence..good on ya Pumba haha!

Toy Story (1995)

Toy Story...well it is part of a extremely successful trilogy. I think it fulfils every child's dream or suspicion that all their toys come alive when they leave their room or aren't around...even now, lets be honest, that would be pretty cool if it was true, haha not that I have a woody or buzz sitting on my bed but ya know ;)

This was the first fully computer-generated movie. Amazing animation, cool characters, people still dress up as them at halloween/ parties, kids and adults alike love it!

A bit of Toy story trivia:
- Whenever a character blinks, its never at the same time as another character.
-Woody and Buzz were inspired by the directors favourite childhood toys.
- One of the other possible titles was "You Are a Toy"
- Early scripts has a barbie as Woody's girlfriend.
- Only Pixar film to have full opening credits.
- Sid Phillips was based on a previous Pixar worker.

Aladdin (1992)

A great mix of adventure, comedy and classic Disney romance topped off with a few moral take home messages. I can watch this movie over and over, my nieces and nephews love it, who doesn't?

I recently had a murder mystery party, and went as the Genie because he is the most awesome character. Jafar is a great "bad guy" with his parrot sidekick. Love how Aladdin has the monkey sidekick - one on both sides!

Ok time for some Aladdin trivia:
- Robin Williams (the voice of the genie) improvised so much during recordings that they had over 16 hours of material.
- It was the first animated movie to gross over $200 million
- An imax version of the film was planned but not released
- There was a rumour that Aladdin said "take off your clothes" while on her balcony but really he was talking to the tiger and said "Nice kitty, take off and go, go on". Consequently this part was taken out of the 2004 platinum edition.

LOVE Disney, they are all such good clean films, kids love them as do the adults and keeps everyone entertained. However over the years Disney have ventured further and further out of their comfort zone I think, although thats just my opinion. Anyway awesome top 3!

FAST AND FURIOUS 6

MOVIE REVIEW: Fast and Furious 6.

As the poster says "all roads lead to this". The Fast and Furious series has come along way from tuned up cars with playstations and artistic vinyl on the side of the car. It has evolved into a more mature feel with the implementation of vintage muscle and luxury cars. For some, it may not be as appealing as the concept of the movie has driven away from street races, but has evolved into a more criminal concept of robbing banks and transporting money for the cartel. Despite this transition, the fast and furious series does not fail to entertain with high speed chases, explosions, gun fire and fight scenes.

Fast and Furious 6 links in the plots of the previous fast and furious movies. The plot is decent for a movie filled with cars and action but this does not take away from the action and occasional humor. The locations of the movie add a major factor with insance chases through busy streets and cliffhanging actions scenes down a highway and a ridiculously long runway. The teaming up of Vin Disel and Dwayne Johnson is a massive plus and also sexy girls like Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez and Gal Gadot. The movie is action packed and contains a ton of cars we wished we had.

Rating: 8/10

One Direction: This Is Us!

Not exactly sure if you can call this a movie...more of a documentary, but it hit big in the cinemas, so I guess it counts right? haha! Now don't get me wrong, I am in no way a massive die hard 1D groupie, screaming at the very sight of them like a teenage girl, quite the opposite...in actual fact before watching this (having been forced to by my niece) I knew very little about these boys. I do like their albums though and may have listened to them on the way to work each day for a while (yep one of those guilty pleasure bahaha).

Opinions, criticisms and all negativity aside.....lesbihonest here....they are international superstars. Having number 1s in 37 countries....holding numerous sell out tours, even just the evidence of having this movie shows they have hit the BIG TIME. And all this from the beginnings of x-factor, a show that they didn't even win! 5 ordinary guys to 5 idolised popstars in the space of a few years....

So back to the movie....it follows their story, their background, their journey so far. Opening weekend it made $18 million in the U.S of A! - basically all the teenage girls of America!

There isn't really much I can say about the movie, it was probably a waste of my time watching it and I will never watch it again, but thats mainly because I'm not too bothered about how they became famous or about their individual backgrounds, all I need to know is they started on xfactor and now sell millions of albums which has made them hugely famous.

We did see clips at the end of the movie with some pranks being pulled off....which would have been better if they had used things like that as a premise for the film, instead of just somewhat fake and scripted tame versions of the 5 personalities.

Anyhow, if you are a teenage girl of course you will love it....if you are a parent having to take your daughter then unlucky haha. Other than that I don't see a reason why people would go see this....

Rating 3/10 (and it only gets that because I like their music :P)

CH

P.S. I must say though this music video to their latest single did make me laugh!

Catch Me If You Can (2002)

http://hirenj.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/catch-me.jpg

Catch Me If You Can (2002) - Crime, Drama

It is a 2002 American biographical crime comedy-drama film based on the life of Frank Abagnale. The first half of the film starts when Frank runs away from home when his parents get divorced. In order to survive, Franks develops (Leonardo DiCaprio) his cons from a substitute teacher in his French class to cheque fraud, and expands to con the identities of Pan American World Airways pilots, a doctor and lawyer. After he gets caught by the FBI bank fraud agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) and is sentenced for 12 years in prison. Carl later convinces the FBI to offer a deal to Frank as a bank fraud agent of the FBI for the remainder of his sentence in exchange for a certain level of freedom, which Frank accepts.

Reasons to watch it

  1. ·         The director of this movie is Steven Spielberg
  2. ·         A cat-and-mouse game between  Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks
  3. ·       The story is remarkable, Frank is ballsy enough to con his way out by trying various        occupation including doctor, pilot and lawyer.

OLD BUT GOLD.

PULP FICTION
Directed by Quentin Tarantino

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon you."- Ezekiel 25:17

This is your classic badass film with a star studded cast directed by the great director he is Quentin Tarantino. Like most Tarantino films it starts at the end, and ends at the end with the whole story being placed in between. The acting from the likes of Samuel L, Jackson, John Travolta and Bruce Willis makes it hard for you to take your eyes of the screen. Every line seems to hit you in the face. The movie is filled with memorable quotes and how the actors deliver these quotes makes it even harder to forget.

The movie follows three main story threads which help you understand what is happening in the movie, with threads coming from Butch, Vincent and Jules. Each thread has their on inner meaning and learning curve for each character due to a catalyst bringing forward a problem for the character.

This movie entertains me in many ways and hopefully its the same for you. Its one of those movies where you can watch it again and again and it will never get old.

RATING: 10/10

Upcoming and Unmissable!

    THE HUNGER GAME: CATCHING FIRE
            In Cinemas: 22nd November 2013

"This is the 75th year of the Hunger Games. The tributes are to be reaped on the existing pool of victors" - President Snow.
We are in for more action, drama, rebellion, romance, and this time, experienced killers against each other! Not having read the books I thought it would be hard to take the sequel up another level BUT I think this trilogy is going to be one that outdoes itself with each movie.
Everybody has been waiting for this since the first movie and now the time is nearly upon us! :D

THOR: THE DARK WORLD
        30th October 2013

I almost feel like we have been waiting too long for this, it was advertised way too early, and with took many preview clips. HOWEVER as time gets closer I am excited, and it will be a big hit! Question is can it live up to the high bar that The Avengers set? Ironman 3 managed to, can this?
Bit of movie trivia:  - 30 hammers of different sizes and material were used in filming. - A new language was created for the Dark Elves. - Filming took place at Stone Henge. - Natalie Portman (Jane) was forced to return to the sequel through her contract, she did not want to. - Shot in England.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG
           In Cinemas: 26th December 2013

I found the first one was good, a little slow, but loved Martin Freeman as Bilbo, i honestly thought he played that role perfectly! Very good actor indeed!
I expect this second instalment to be more exciting, have more action and be a bit more fast paced - similar situation to the last Harry Potter book that was split into two, and the second part was much better than the first. Legolas is featured, which is exciting having another from the LOTR characters join the adventure!
If you're confounded as to what to get someone for Christmas, start with tickets to this massive hit!

Overall I am looking forward to all 3, probably Catching Fire the most. They are all quite a different style of film despite having the commonality of adventure and heroism. Which one will bring in the most money? We shall have to wait and see!!

A Beautiful Mind (2001), Biography, drama
Director: Ron Howard
Cast
Russell Crowe … John Nash
Jennifer Connelly…Alicia Nash

It’s a biographical drama based on the life of John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics.
In 1947, John Nash starts his study at Princeton University as a co-recipient of the prestigious Carnegie Scholarship for mathematics and begins an unlikely friendship with his roommate Charles Herman. Later, based on a discussion of how to approach a group of women at bar, he starts to develop and publish a new concept of governing dynamics, which secure his office at MIT. Some years later, Nash is invited to the Pentagon to crack encrypted code from intercepted enemy telecommunication. He then runs into the mysterious William Parcher, who is offering him an assignment, to find a Soviet plot from the patterns in magazines and newspapers. Nash is obsess about looking for patterns and becomes more and more paranoid. He starts causing troubles to himself and his family, with the help from his wife Alicia, he eventually realises both his roommate Charles, Charles’s niece Marcee the mysterious William Parcher exist only in his imagination. He starts to study and teach by the help of an old friend Hansen, and finally receives the Nobel Prize.

I think the key idea behind this movie is the way to show how a schizophrenia would think, act and how he could possibly be sane again. I must admire Ron Howard’s set up; the delusions are as real as reality to John Nash, as it is to all the audience. Crowe’s acting is also remarkable, the elegance in his walk words and voice, cooperate with another amazing actress Jennifer Connelly. I would say this is definitely a masterpiece that is worth watching.

My favourite quotes
“Nash: Classes will dull your mind; destroy the potential for authentic creativity”
“ Hansen: So how about it, Nash? You’re scared?
Nash: Terrified, mortified, petrified, stupefied, by you”
“Nash: I still see things that are not here. I just choose not to acknowledge them. Like a diet of the mind, I just choose not to include certain appetite; like my appetite for patterns; perhaps my appetite to imagine and to dream”

My personal rating: 10/10

Avatar(2009) Action, Sci-fi, Adverture and Fantasy in 3D

  Director: James Cameron

Avatar is another epic sci-fi film produced a few years ago
The story happens at a distance future, like any other sci-fi films, when humans have depleted Earth’s natural resources and start harvesting natural resources from a distant planet called Pandora.  Pandora is absolute dangerous for humans, yet it has a valuable mineral – Unobatanium. In order to explore the Pandora’s biosphere, scientists create “Avatars”, a hybrid between native humanoids – Na’vi and human, operated by genetically matched humans.  The main character Jake Sully decodes to take his brother’s place as the operator for one of the Avatar, after his brother is killed in a robbery. His job is to infiltrate to the Na’vi and gather Intel to coöperate with the military units. During Jake’s mission, he fall in love with the native Na’vi named Neytiri. He later discovers military’s extermination tactics for all the species that stand between them and the mineral, and decides to unite different Na’vi Tribes and fight back.

10 Reasons you should watch it

  • ·    The movie is made by the same director who casted Titanic
  • ·     Avatar broke the record for the top-grossing worldwide release of all-time, which was casted by the same director’s movie back in 1997-Titanic.
  • ·     Even you are not a big fan for sci-fi movie; it will still blow your mind by the quality of visual effects and sophisticated aspects from the new planet – Pandora.
  • ·     Humans are using advance weaponry including robots and flying carrier. The native –Na’vi gets the help from native creatures, such as the direhorses and mountain banshee, or even the legendary “last shadow”.
  • ·     Avatar was using the most advance 3D film-making technology back then. It even initiated a revolution for the entire film industry.
  • ·     The movie lasts for 2 hours and 40 minutes, but you can barely find a time to break if you watch it in cinema because the entire movie is so intense and full of actions.

My favourite quotes
  • “I see you”
  • “One life ends, another begins”

Whether you are a sci-fi fan or not, I strongly recommend you to watch this movie if you havn’t done so yet.
